Wednesday's Utah state meet was marked by its outsized importance to the national picture, the depth of talent relative to its population and a shared pride for how it all played out at Sugar House Park.

Perhaps the best line came from Class 4A girls individual winner Julie Sumsion of Springville, who overtook defending champion Kate Hunter of Provo to win in 17:55.8.

"I think out competitiors help us make us who we are, so I'm really grateful for them," she said.

In a big picture way, powerful teams have been spurring one another in Utah for a couple of decades. And in the last 10 years, Davis and American Fork have become well known to followers of the national scene, but the desire to be great extends to many other programs in Utah. 

Add Olympus High School of Holladay to that list. The Titans built upon a confidence-boosting Region 6 meet and upset US#11 Timpanogos 67-74 to win the Class 4A boys title. Springville wsa third with 80 and Ogden was fourth with 89. 

"After winning region we knew (winning state) was a possibility," Olympus second finisher Jima Rout said. "Timpanogos, Springville, Ogden -- these guys are great competition in Utah."

At the Class 5A level, American Fork swept the boys and girls titles. The US#1 boys, led by individual US#1 Casey Clinger, scored 42 points. Clinger broke his own meet record with 14:42.9 for three miles and teammate McKay Johns was second in 14:49 and Patrick Parker was fifth in 15:00.

"My goal is to run faster (than last year) each meet," Clinger said. "And it's worked out so far. I couldn't do it without these guys. They push me every day in practice."

Joe Benson, the senior lead of Timpanogos, repeated as the 4A champion in 15:03.3. But the loss to Olympus stung.

"I'm really mad," Benson said. "You can't really celebrate when you just win it yourself without the team. That was a good humbling moment, because we came in confident."

 

Highlights

- Casey Clinger put his final stamp on the Utah state championships by running the fastest time (14:42.9 for 3 miles) in meet history. American Fork went 1-2-5 on the way to winning the program's seventh Class 5A title in eight years. It was Cavemen 42, Lone Peak 75, Davis 85. 

- Joe Benson of Timpanogos retained his Class 4A individual title with 15:03.3, but the No. 11 Timberwolves were defeated by Olympus, 67-74. 

- In the Class 5A girls race, US#22 American Fork defeated US#26 Davis, 68-78. Whitney Rich of Bingham ran 17:39.4 for the fourth-fastest time in meet history.

- In the Class 4A girls race, the Timpanogos girls edged Mountain View by a single point, 85-86.Skyline was third with 90. Julie Sumison from Springville won the race in 17:55.8.

- In the Class 3A boys race, Jaiden Melendrez and teammate Spencer Ford from Desert Hills went 1-2 to lead the team to a 45-49 victory over Pine View.  

- In the Class 3A girls race, sophomore Bailey Brinkerhoff of Desert Hills won it with 18:22.6 but Pine View put five in the top 15 to win the team title.

- Sadie Sargeant and Maggie Zwahlen of North Summit went 1-2 and led the team to victory (57 points). Sargeant ran 17:58.0.

- Millard beat Emery 72-83 for the Class 2A boys title, while Jace Richins of North Summit won the race in 16:13.2.

- In Class 1A, Parowan and Panguitch battled for the team titles, each taking one. The Panguitch boys beat Parowan and Monticello, 36-73-76. Parowan won the girls title over Panguitch, 36-48.
