Utah State Meet: American Fork and Davis split; fastest times for Saarel, Biles

Boys Teams: US#4/SW#1 American Fork (Marc Bloom Super 25) took four of the top seven spots to build a big margin over rival Davis and the rest of the field in 5A, and tallied a miniscule 29 pts. in the 16-team field to win their 4th straight title. US#25/SW#6 Davis scored 54 and Riverton a strong 74 in third. In 4A, US#24/SW#5 Herriman improved from 5th in 2011 and squeaked out victory on a 6th-man tiebreaker, as unranked Bonneville matched them with 68 pts. Herriman also had a slightly better average than Davis, but Davis was second overall in combined scoring. SW#9Mountain View (the defending champ) was third in 4A and seventh overall.

Boys Indiv: US#13 and Park City sr Ben Saarel went 14:56.7 for 3M to threepeat in 3A by more than 30 seconds and clock the fastest time of the meet. A great battle in 4A saw Timpanogos srJacob Heslington edge Logan sr Jerrell Mock, 15:06.9 to 15:07.8, to defend his title while Sky View soph Conner Mantz – second as a frosh – was a still-impressive third with 15:17.8. In 5A, Alta jr Kramer Morton, 9th last year, topped American Fork sr Brayden McLelland, 15:13.2 to 15:18.1.

Girls Teams: Before the boys’ 5A race, Davis had already earned a state title over American Fork, their US#25/SW#4 girls winning their third straight title with 37 points to their SW#6 rivals’ 51.Bingham edged Lehi for third, 102-104. The best combined race totals, after Davis, went toMountain Crest and Park City. Mountain Crest scored 40 to roll in 4A over Orem’s 100, while Park City defeated the 3A field for the 5th straight time, with their 36 pulling away from Ogden’s 44. Park City actually had the best average time of the meet.

Girls Individuals: Herriman soph Lucy Biles had the performance of the meet, running 17:49.6 to win 4A by 25 seconds. She was 41st last year. Orem sr Summer Harper was 3rd for the 2nd straight year. In 3A, Cedar jr Aimee Bryson was the only other runner under 18:00 with her 17:59.6, which beat Ogden jr Sarah Feeny (18:12.7, 4th overall). Bingham sr Emily Rich took 5A in 18:01.8, moving up from 5th and winning by 16 seconds. Two-time 5A champ Shea Martinez of Davis was 7th.
